Curriculum
Key Stage 3: Years 7-9
In their first three years students study English, Mathematics,
Science, Art Design Technology, Drama, French (and for some
students German), Geography, History, Information Technology,
Music, PE and Religious Studies/PHCSE. The importance of technology
and of Information Technology as a tool for learning is recognised
throughout the curriculum. We also try and develop skills as much
as possible at KS3 so equipping students with the tools necessary
to be successful not just academically but in life itself. In Year
9, students start GCSE courses early in RS, ICT, DT and for some,
Triple Science.
Key Stage 4: Years 10 and 11
Our curriculum reflects Archway's Technology College status.
Students take GCSE courses from a range which includes English
Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science, Design Technology,
ICT, Modern Foreign Language, History, Geography, Music and
Business amongst others. We also have a range of non GCSE courses
such as BTECs in Science, Sport, Home Cooking Skills as well as an
Outdoor Challenge course that provides students with Wider Key
Skill Qualifications. They also follow non-examination lessons in
PE and Personal, Social and Health Education, incorporating Careers
guidance.
Sixth Form
Many students continue their post-16 education at Archway because
of the relevance of the courses on offer and the quality of
teaching, environment and guidance provided. Our Sixth Form offers
a range of courses to suit 16-18 year olds of all abilities. A wide
range of A Levels and BTEC courses are offered which lead to
University, further training or directly into employment. A one
year Level 2 BTEC course is offered which leads either to Level 3
courses or on to employment.
Archway Sixth form is part of the Stroud Post-16 Consortium
which enables students to access courses at Downfield Sixth Form or
Stroud College. A separate Sixth Form Prospectus is available from
the school.
At all stages of their education, students have access to careers
guidance. It forms part of the Personal, Health and Social
Education Programme. In years 10 and 11 students are taught by
specialist staff who deliver a course covering careers guidance,
working practices, preparation for work experience, career and
post-16 opportunities. All students have a work experience
placement in Year 11
