Sixth Form Admissions

Why choose Archway Sixth Form?

A Comprehensive Curriculum

The range of approximately 25 A Level and vocational subjects provide a wide range of options for students to choose from, whatever their aspirations. We are the only Post-16 provider in the Stroud area to offer this blend of traditional academic and vocational qualifications.

In addition to this, Year 13 can choose to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This is the equivalent of an AS Level and gives the opportunity to produce a piece of work that’s truly individual, whether it’s a written research report, event, or creative artefact. As an EPQ is an independent research project it is also an excellent taster of university-style learning.

We also offer a Sixth Form Bursary fund of up to £1200 a year to support students whose families face financial challenges.

‘The teachers are very supportive, and the lessons are exciting.’ Rhys, Year 12

‘I've enjoyed the independence involved in learning as it has helped me to become more organised, prepared, and excited for my future. The subjects I have chosen have challenged me to work harder and I really enjoy the wide variety of areas we get to explore at A Level.’ Rhiannon, Year 12

Achievement for All

Archway is proud to be a comprehensive school, and we strive for students of all abilities to achieve their full potential. Our results are consistently in line with, or above, the national average and high-quality teaching across the subject areas delivers the very highest grades, with 26% of grades achieved in 2019 being A* to A / Distinction * to Distinction.

‘Teachers are supportive and go above and beyond' Ellie, Year 12

'I like the small class sizes and individual help and attention from my teachers.'  Sam, Year 12

Pastoral Care
High quality pastoral care is fundamentally important to ensure the wellbeing and safety of our students, as well as helping them to develop into well-rounded and responsible members of society. Our Sixth Form team, including our Learning Mentor, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Head of Sixth Form, form tutors and sixth form teaching staff, work hard to ensure the academic and personal well-being of every individual student.

Our Pastoral care includes:

  • Supporting the successful transition of students from Y11 into the Sixth Form, including the provision of transition materials to develop study skills and subject knowledge, and a Year 12 Induction Day.
  • Termly mentoring with tutors, providing one to one academic advice and guidance to help students reach their potential.
  • Regular assemblies addressing pastoral issues, such as mental health, personal safety, and wellbeing.
  • One to one academic and pastoral support from our Learning Mentor.
  • Careers advice and guidance, cultural enrichment, and the development of skills through our tutor programme.

Enrichment

Many of the skills that our students will need to be successful in adult life are also developed outside the classroom, through our enrichment programme. This focusses on the soft skills valued by employers and universities, such as teamwork, communication, independence, problem solving, mentoring, and organisational skills. It also encourages students to make a positive contribution to the school and local communities.

Our enrichment programme includes a wide range of opportunities including supporting younger students through peer reading programmes, helping organise and run subject specific clubs, being ambassadors for the school and subject areas, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Programme, charity fundraising activities, environmental projects, and running sports activities for primary school students.

Student Leadership

Our Sixth Form Committee, led by our two head students, meet weekly to discuss fundraising, school and community campaigns and events, and social activities. Recently the committee have organised a fundraising event for Children in Need, planned a sixth form virtual quiz night, and started to plan a roof garden project to increase biodiversity in the school.

Social Events

The Student Committee organises social events throughout the year including the Winter and Spring Balls, which foster a sense of school community and develop links and friendships between Year 12 and Year 13. The Summer Ball, which takes place at Stonehouse Court, offers the chance to dress to impress and celebrate the achievements of Year 12 and 13, and mark the end of the Year 13’s time at Archway Sixth Form.

‘Not only is the academic side of the Sixth form great, with so many subject options to choose from, but the social side of the Sixth form is also amazing! The socials we have, the dress up days, the pyjama days etc. all makes it very exciting!’ Ella, Year 13

Facilities

Archway Sixth Form has a dedicated Common Room that is used for study during students’ study periods. The Common Room has an IT suite and two banks of laptops for student use. In addition to this, students have access to the library facilities and smaller quiet study rooms.

Outside of lessons, the Common Room and kitchen facilities are used as an area for Year 12 and 13 students to relax and socialise.

Excellent sports facilities are available for Sixth Form use, such as a gym, sports hall, tennis courts and playing fields.

‘I love having a kitchen area to make nice hot drinks in the winter!’ Hannah, Year 13

Subjects

We recognise that every student has their own aspirations and dreams.  The wide variety of approximately 25 A Level and BTEC Level 3 courses available at Archway Sixth Form provide a comprehensive set of options to choose from.  We are the only Post-16 provider in the Stroud area to offer this blend of traditional academic and vocational qualifications.

We ensure that the subjects on offer here can open the door of any UK university, and our students have gone on to achieve all over the country be it at university, college or through apprenticeships.

What is an A Level?

Advanced level qualifications (known as A levels) are subject-based qualifications that can lead to university, further study, training, or work. At Archway you can study three or four A levels over two years. They’re usually assessed by a series of examinations, although many also include an element of coursework.

What is a BTEC/Cambridge National?

BTECs and Cambridge Nationals are specialist work-related qualifications that can lead to university, further study, training, or work. These courses combine practical learning with subject and theory content. They have a higher content of coursework than most A Levels, but there is also an examined element.

Links to Higher Education

We have developed links with a range of universities, giving our students the experiences and skills to reach their aspirations. These include:

We have close links with the University of Bristol and many Year 12 and Year 13 students participate in the Access to Bristol and Pathways to Health Science programmes every year. In 2020-21, 10 students from Archway School Sixth Form are taking part.

Students attend a series of sessions on Wednesday afternoons during the autumn or spring term. The sessions give an idea of what it is like to study at the University of Bristol, working with academics and current students who can offer advice and guidance about higher education and their subject area.

In addition to Access to Bristol, 11 students last year took part in other activities at the University, such as Taster Days and Options Conferences.

Taking part shows a commitment to further study that strengthens university applications. Students who successfully complete the programme are guaranteed a contextual offer/interview from Bristol, a top-ten UK University (QS World University Rankings 2020).

Students at Archway Sixth Form have the opportunity to participate in several different programmes at the University of Bath:

On Track to Bath:

On Track to Bath is a one-year, blended learning programme, which will support students to develop their independent learning, academic research and employability skills, and will help them to make an informed choice about future university courses. Students spend time on campus and undertake their own research project with the support of some of our academic staff and current students.

Pathway to Bath

Pathway to Bath is a flexible, online curriculum enrichment programme which gives students the chance to develop important key skills for university study by completing their own research project (or similar) while working alongside experienced university staff and current students. The programme includes a summer residential visit to their beautiful campus, to experience all that university life has to offer (Covid-19 restrictions permitting).

Discover Bath

A summer programme which aims to give students a taste of first-year life and study at Bath. The focus is on a 4-day summer school, where students will work on university level work and students will have some work to do before and afterwards to make the most of the experience.

The Study Skills Day takes place at the University of Gloucestershire at the start of Year 12 and is focussed on developing the skills that are fundamental to success in A Level and BTEC qualifications. During this day lecturers from the University deliver sessions on note-taking, essay writing, and critical thinking.

Sixth Form Open Day Visit

16-19 Tuition Fund Statement

What is the 16-19 tuition fund?

The 16-19 tuition fund is one off funding for the 2021/2022 academic year that is ring-fenced for sixth form institutions to support students and mitigate disruption to learning arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding is being used to provide small group tuition for 16–19-year-olds where their learning has been disrupted and they have a GCSE Maths and/or English grade of Grade 4 or below. Although targeted students are identified based on their prior attainment in English and Maths, the funding can be used to support students in their learning across a variety of subjects.

How will the funding be used?

The funding will be used to provide additional support to small groups of students that have not yet achieved a grade 4/5 in Mathematics or English. Within this cohort targeted student intervention will be initially be focused on students that are yet to achieve a grade 4 in English and/or Maths. Surplus funds may be then be used to target students that are yet to achieve their grade 5 in Maths and/or English.

Archway Sixth Form will receive £2,945 in funding. This will be used as follows:

  • To run additional small group classes, up to a maximum size of five, where necessary.
  • To purchase bespoke resources to support learning in these smaller classes where appropriate.

Archway School is committed to ensuring the tuition fund is used in accordance with the Government’s guidance by:

  • Producing this statement explaining how we will use the funding in line with guidance to prioritise support for disadvantaged students.
  • Publishing this statement on our website.
  • Recording the use of the funding, including reference to the individual students that receive the support, the needs of those students, the number of hours of tuition delivered, and retaining the necessary evidence of the tuition provided.
  • Delivering the extra tuition and spending the associated funding in the 2021 to 2022 academic year.
  • Notifying Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) of any unspent funding from this fund in order for it to be reclaimed.
