High quality pastoral care is fundamentally important to ensure the wellbeing and safety of our students, as well as helping them to develop into well-rounded and responsible members of society. Our Sixth Form team, including our Learning Mentor, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, Head of Sixth Form, form tutors and sixth form teaching staff, work hard to ensure the academic and personal well-being of every individual student.

Our Pastoral care includes:

• Supporting the successful transition of students from Y11 into the Sixth Form, including the provision of transition materials to develop study skills and subject knowledge, and a Year 12 Induction Day.
• Termly mentoring with tutors, providing one to one academic advice and guidance to help students reach their potential.
• Regular assemblies addressing pastoral issues, such as mental health, personal safety, and wellbeing.
• One to one academic and pastoral support from our Learning Mentor.
• Careers advice and guidance, cultural enrichment, and the development of skills through our tutor programme.

Careers Guidance

Comprehensive Careers Information Advice and Guidance is a theme that runs through both Year 12 and Year 13, providing students with the information, experiences and support they need to research career paths and make successful applications to jobs, apprenticeships and universities. Our Careers Information Advice and Guidance programme includes:

• One to one support and guidance for UCAS and apprenticeship applications
• Careers-focussed assemblies and tutor programme
• Mock interviews
• Meet the expert event, where students can meet and question people from different industries
• Work experience placement
• Links to programmes at local universities
• Personalised support for Oxbridge and medical applicants
• Visits to the UCAS exhibition and National Apprenticeship Show

Enrichment

Many of the skills that our students will need to be successful in adult life are also developed outside the classroom, through our enrichment programme. This focusses on the soft skills valued by employers and universities, such as teamwork, communication, independence, problem solving, mentoring, and organisational skills. It also encourages students to make a positive contribution to the school and local communities.

Our enrichment programme includes a wide range of opportunities including supporting younger students through peer reading programmes, helping organise and run subject specific clubs, being ambassadors for the school and subject areas, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Programme, charity fundraising activities, environmental projects, and running sports activities for primary school students.

Student Leadership

Our Sixth Form Committee, led by our two head students, meet weekly to discuss fundraising, school and community campaigns and events, and social activities. At Archway Sixth Form there is a focus on students taking ownership of the development of the Sixth Form and driving change. Recently the committee have organised a fundraising event for Children in Need, planned a sixth form virtual quiz night, and started to plan a roof garden project to increase biodiversity in the school.

Social Events

The Student Committee organises social events throughout the year including the Winter and Spring Balls, which foster a sense of school community and develop links and friendships between Year 12 and Year 13. The Summer Ball, which takes place at Stonehouse Court, offers the chance to dress to impress and celebrate the achievements of Year 12 and 13, and mark the end of the Year 13’s time at Archway Sixth Form.

Facilities

Archway Sixth Form has a dedicated Common Room that is used for study during students’ study periods. The Common Room has an IT suite and two banks of laptops for student use. In addition to this, students have access to the library facilities and smaller quiet study rooms.

Outside of lessons, the Common Room and kitchen facilities are used as an area for Year 12 and 13 students to relax and socialise.

Excellent sports facilities are available for Sixth Form use, such as a gym, sports hall, tennis courts and playing fields.
