Year 10 English Schools Athletics Track & Field Cup Success - 8th in the South West

Following their success last year in the English Schools Athletics Track and Field Cup as Year 9s, the Year 10 athletics team has again stepped up their performances.

The first round saw the team travel to the Prince of Wales Stadium to take on schools from all over the Gloucestershire area, with the winner going to Millfield to take on the best of the South West. The rules of the event were not so simple, with each athlete of the 14 man squad having to do two events and points were awarded on their performances, not their position. With a few changes to the original team on the day, the team rose to the challenge and delivered a win against some very tough opposition. Nathan Clift (300 metres and triple jump) scored top  out of all the athletes there, with 39 points, Levi Mathews (200 metres and triple jump) gained 38 points and Rhys Hitchings gained 37 points (long jump and hurdles).

The trip to Millfield, one of the most prestigious sporting schools in the Country, was an excellent experience for the team. With outstanding facilities, the team worked hard to gain every point possible. However, going against top private and grammar schools from the whole of the South West, the challenge was far greater for the team. Levi Mathews was again a strong performer in the 200 metres and triple jump, picking up 38 points and Rhys Hitchings winning 37 points in his hurdles and long jump events. Overall Archway finished 8th on the day but in the bigger picture, put Archway 8th in the South West; not a bad achievement at all!

The District Athletics takes place at Prince of Wales Stadium is 27th June, where the team will look to win the District Title for the 4th year running. Alongside this, all other year groups will look to be successful. Then the focus moves to Sports Day on Wednesday 5th July.
