Archway School

Year 9 Rugby

Our Y9 Rugby team have had a great season.

For the first time in our history we have advanced through the EDF County Cup reaching the semi-final after some very tight victories against Churchdown School after a Sami Counter last minute winner and, in very similar circumstances, a last minute winner from Bailey Beale against Severn Vale in the Quarter finals.

Tuesday 6th March saw us face Cotswold School of Bourton on the Water at home in the Semi-final. A win in that game would secure a historic first trip to Kingsholm, home of premier league Gloucester, in the County cup final.

The tie was a physical battle from the word go but one that Archway were able to just edge with a 4 point victory winning 29-25. Try scorers on the day were Josh Mackie picking up and driving over the line from the number 8 position on a scrum and a superb hat-trick from Tom ‘Dave’ Samak, each showcasing individual brilliance. Tactical brilliance at the end saw the decision to kick for posts and take the 3 points that all but sealed the victory giving a 9 point lead. Levi Francis’s majestic boot kicking 9 points during the game, the only miss came off the post from the side line. In contrast Cotswold were forced out wide for each of their tries and able to convert none. The decision to kick the 3 points appeared an excellent one as the final try of the night was scored by Cotswold but proved to be only a consolation as Archway finished 29-25 winners.

The final at Kingsholm is set for Wednesday 2nd May, spectators are welcome and encouraged, further details will be available soon.
