Year 7 Trip to Spirax Sarco
Mrs Ruggles and I took nine Year 7 students to Spirax Sarco as part of an International Women in Engineering event.
Spirax Sarco specialise in steam system engineering. The students had a tour of site, including overlooking the factory floor and they discovered that a lot of engineering happens in offices by the research and design teams. We were shown around by two ladies who were both engineers, one of whom had started as an apprentice at 16. After the tour, they were split into teams with other schools to develop a steam-powered boat which they then entered into a race. Great fun was had watching their steam-powered boat race to the finish line. They also had the opportunity to see up close a steam traction engine called Marjorie.
They all had a fantastic time and the morning has certainly given them some ideas for future careers.
