Catering for All at Calcot!

A beautiful summer’s day was spent by Year 9 Archway Food students at Calcot on Wednesday 27th June, experiencing the hospitality industry at its finest. Under the direction of Paul (Director), Ali (Manager) and Matt (Baker) the students organised, prepared and served Afternoon Tea for 75 guests!

Parents, carers, teachers and students all came together to enjoy a range of beautiful sandwiches, scones and cakes all made and served by the students with special diets eg dairy free, gluten free and vegetarian an important consideration.

     The Barn, a blank canvas on arrival was transformed by the students. Initially daunted by the task, they overcame their nerves, selected leaders, designated roles and very quickly started relishing the opportunity they had been given. Furniture was collected, counted and placed, linen and skirts dressed the tables, napkins folded with ribbons, flowers selected, crockery chosen, cutlery placed and bunting hung – all co-ordinating and appropriate for a beautiful summer event.

     All students benefitted hugely from the event whether it be developing their hospitality skills, opening their eyes to a career in the industry or simply developing their personal skills:     

     “We cooked using huge mechanical mixing bowls!” - Ashleigh

     “This inspired me, seeing all the different jobs and the choices I could make.” - Chantal

     “The best part was how much responsibility we had. I was surprised at how much work goes in to setting up the room and tables.” - Jorja

     A particular highlight was to see Ben (Year 9 student) fully involved in the day. Food is one of Ben’s favourite subjects and one of his possible career choices is to be a Chef.  He has flourished in Food lessons this year, working more and more independently, confidently, making a wide range of quality products and not needing to use any specialist equipment that was required in the early stages of the course. Ben continued in this vein at Calcot where he got fully immersed in all of the making, although he was disappointed to be making the scones and not the chocolate brownies! His favourite part was “laying the tables and showing my creativity” and of course not forgetting catering for his Mum and Nan!


Parents/carers were so proud of their children and thankful for such an opportunity:

     A very tiring day but one in which we were all happy to repeat again. A very big thank you to Calcot for a fantastic and very worthwhile opportunity!
