Archway School

Cheltenham Literature Festival 2019

With another successful year of campaigning, Archway School were among five schools selected to travel to Cheltenham Literature Festival and compete in the Dystopian: Battle of the Books final!

With weeks of careful planning, research and debating, our nominated speaker, Sarah (Y9) was all prepped and ready to battle it out with rival schools as to why Divergent was really the most relevant Dystopian novel.

The day arrived and with glorious sunshine (and Mrs Locke’s birthday!) we arrived at the Festival. Whilst many students followed Sarah into the InkPot tent for the debate, others joined a thoroughly interesting workshop on the concept of Fake News and satire. Despite Mrs Locke, Mrs Walton and numerous students championing on Sarah and Divergent, unfortunately we did not make it through to the final three books. But we didn’t let this spoil the day! With lots of congratulating and homemade cakes, we perked up our spirits and joined the final talk of the day – from Dystopia to Comedy by William Sutcliffe.

The trip ended on high spirits as we rushed back to the coach following lots of selfies with the Gruffalo! Although we didn’t win, we all agreed that Divergent and Sarah were definitely winners in our eyes.
