We’ve been super busy in the MFL department these last 2 terms with students taking part in various competitions to celebrate European Languages Day.
First up was the Year 7 French Themed Book Covering Competition and prizes went to Daniel Green 7P, Sam Turner 7B and Daisy Szczepura 7C.
This was followed by the Year 7 & 8 European General Knowledge Treasure Hunt and congratulations go to Rowan Troy 7C and Ryan Adams 8W.
The GCSE students also had a chance to show off their knowledge by taking part in the VocabExpress League of Champions Cup where we competed with schools both nationally and as far away as Bangkok.
As a school we came 20th in the French Piccolo Challenge Cup & 13th in the German Piccolo Challenge Cup.
Well done to Alisha Pearse 9W who led the French challenge and Georgina Grant 9P who headed up the German leaders board.
Year 9 French students were set a “Great British Bake Off” task with the added difficulty of the recipe being written in French.
All the competitors managed to create delicious cookies. Bon Appétit!!
GCSE German Trip to Berlin
Not such an early start compared to usual MFL trips but we still managed to pack lots into our linguistic, cultural and cross curricular 3 day visit to the German Capital.
Students sampled Lebkuchen, Bratwurst and bought beautiful handy crafts in the traditional Christmas markets.
They also practised their ice-skating skills. History was also high on the agenda with visits to The GedächtnisKirche, Checkpoint-Charlie, the Jewish Museum and the Berlin Wall which features the Eastside Gallery.
The trip was rounded off with a visit to the German Parliament “The Reichstag” which houses the famous glass dome created by Sir Norman Foster. After all that the students’ language skills were much improved.
Finally, congratulations also to our Linguists of the Term -
Term 1: Phoenix Dangerfield 8R Taia Young 9E Tom Samak 7B
Term 2: Jessica Wilson 11R Beau Marshall 11B Megan McLaughlin 9B
