We’ve had a busy start to the year here in PE with lots of rugby taking place and seeing over 40+ matches across all year groups. The rugby season hasn’t quite finished but the progress of teams and individuals has been noticeable to everyone.
The Year 7s have had some 40+ boys out to training every week and getting better every game. Their highlights have been their first win against Kingshill and finishing 4th in the District Tournament on a cold, wet and windy Saturday morning. Along the way they have received some coaching from the local RFU Rugby Development Coach and there are good numbers now playing for local clubs.
The Year 8s have had a mixed season but did enjoy a good win at Stroud RFC for a Rugby World Cup Experience day against local rivals, Maidenhill.
The Year 9s have done exceptionally well after not winning a game last year, to beat Katharine Lady Berkeley’s and Rednock. After receiving some coaching from Gloucester Rugby Legend Terry Fanolua, they have been very close in the other fixtures, with losses being by only a few points. A loss in the first round of the EDF County Cup isn’t all doom and gloom, with them now being entered in the County Plate and have a good chance to playing at Kingsholm; watch this space!
The Year 10s continue to make good strides by beating Deer Park and KLB in the league, seeing them through to the District League Semi-Final, only to be beaten by an undefeated Kingshill side who were not to be underestimated.
The Year 11s have shown on occasions that they can perform well enough to compete with any team in the District, with close games against Wycliffe and Marling. However, they were just unable to maintain that level for the whole match.
Although football and basketball matches are not yet in full swing, there have been some league and cup matches which have taken place. All Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 teams are out of their respective competitions but aim to go further in the District leagues after Christmas. They are showing promise to do this! The basketball District league is well underway for the Year 9s who have lost both matches by a combined 4 points. With a host of friendlies coming up before the District Tournaments, all teams should be thoroughly prepared!
